Public office holders should enjoy same salary structure – TUC

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday proposed that all public office holders specified under Articles 71 and 190 of the 1992 Constitution should be placed on the same salary structure.

The proposal was contained in the address of Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary-General of the TUC read at the 2013 National May Day parade at Essipong near Sekondi.

He said the proposal may sound radical and may even require a change of the Constitution “but this is the only way forward”.

Mr Asamoah noted that public sector pay can improve if the nation reduce corruption and introduce fairness in the public sector pay administration.

“We also believe that the most effective way to improve pensions is to improve wages,” he said.

Mr Charles Darko, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Grid Company, was presented with this year’s National May Day Award for his assistance to the union and especially to the Public Sector Workers Union.

Some of the placards carried by workers at the parade read: “Save the Pra River from galamsey,” “Government do not politicise education,” “Team work sustains excellence,” and “President remembers your “Bottom three” promises.”
