Public Accounts Committee to consider various reports

Accra, May 27, GNA – The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament is to consider the report of the Auditor-General on the Public Accounts of Ghana’s Consolidated Fund as at the year December 31, 2006 and report back to the House on its findings.

Other documents to be considered by the committee are the Auditor-General’s report on the Statements of the Foreign Exchange Receipts and Payments of the Bank of Ghana for the two half years ending on December 31, 2006.

The Auditor General’s report on the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs and the Traditional Council for the period 2001 to 2004, would also be considered.

Justice Joyce Bamford-Addo, Speaker, referred these reports to the committee to work on them after they were laid in the House by Majority Leader Mr Alban Bagbin.

Earlier, the NPP Member for Atwima-Mponua, Mr Isaac Asiamah, took the House to task over what he described as wasteful spending of public funds for providing each member of the House with two 2009 diaries procured by Parliament.

He drew the Speaker’s attention to the fact that a few months ago members were each given diaries and for the second time running they were again supplied with another set embossed with the logo of Parliament.

“This is reckless use of public funds. we should cut our coat according to our size,” he said.

Mr Bagbin, however, said this was not the time to raise the issue neither was it part of the business for the day. He said the issue had to be raised with the Administration and not the House.

Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Minority Leader, agreed that it was not the proper forum to raise the issue but said it was a matter that should engage their attention and be investigated.

The Speaker said it was right for members to be sensitive about how public funds were used since members needed to earn the title “Honourable”. She, therefore, asked that the matter be investigated by the leadership.
