The Brong-Ahafo Regional Road Safety Committee of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) on Friday called on Government to provide the police with speed radiators to control road crashes.
The Committee identified over-speeding and alcoholism as the major causes of road crashes in the Region noting that because the Police in the Region had no speed radiators and alco-meters, it found it difficult to arrest and prosecute offending drivers.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) David Nyuah, Unit Commander at the Brong-Ahafo Regional Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), made the call on behalf of the Committee at a meeting in Sunyani.
He said the Unit has no single speed radiator saying the provision of calibrated speed radiators would enable the police to embark on effective patrols on highways in the Region to check drivers against over-speeding.
ASP Nyuah said with the onset of the Christmas festivities, road crashes are expected to increase in the Region and there was the need to intensify road patrols.
He disclosed that from January to September this year, 543 road accidents have been recorded in the Region with 196 deaths.
ASP Nyuah said though there had been a slight decrease in road crashes in third quarter of 2013, as compared to the previous year, the situation not the best and appealed to all stakeholders to assist in fighting road accidents.
Mr Agyabeng Mensah Abrampa, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the NRSC, called for an effective collaboration between the Committee, police, transport unions and other key and relevant stakeholders in fighting road fatalities.
