The proprietor of the Big Six Educational Complex in Meduma, Kwabre East Municipality, has been arrested for allegedly preventing two Junior High School students from sitting their Mathematics paper during the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong was apprehended on Monday, June 17, 2025, by the Kwabre East Municipal Education Director, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, with support from Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane, Public Relations Officer of the Education Directorate. He was handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command for investigations into the alleged assault by imprisonment.
According to preliminary reports, Mr. Sarpong confined the two students in a separate room at the examination center, allegedly due to their failure to pay registration fees. The students were only released after the examination had concluded.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, head of the Public Affairs Unit in the Ashanti Region, confirmed the arrest in a statement, describing the incident as “disturbing” and promising a thorough investigation.
The police assured the public that all legal processes would be followed, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The alleged actions have drawn widespread condemnation, with education advocates calling for justice and stronger measures to ensure that no student is denied their right to education or examination participation due to financial constraints.
