Project to build wind speed data in Keta underway

Keta, Sept. 24, GNA – A project to build wind speed data to establish the possibility of harvesting wind for electricity generation in the Keta and Anlo areas is underway.

Should studies currently on-going prove feasible, the project would be expected to produce enough wind power to feed southern Ghana and parts of the Republic of Togo.

Mr Edward Kofi Ahiabor, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Keta stated this when he took a team from the Office of Accountability on a duty tour of the District round the project site. A wind measuring mast attached to a wind pump has already been erected at Keta, which according to satellite data had the strongest wind speed in Ghana.

The tour was a fact-finding mission to assess the performance of the Keta District Assembly in the execution of government initiatives. During the visit the team toured a number of youth farms and some flooded farms near Anloga.

The DCE said if results were positive, windmills would be installed along the coast, the Keta Lagoon area and it fringes to generate power. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is sponsoring the programme.

Mr Ahiabor said investors would be sought for the building of windmills to generate power to supplement the energy needs of the country.
