Programme to resettle Owabi people will begin soon – Minister

Accra, Oct. 19, GNA – Alhaji Mustapha Idri, Minister of Works and Housing on Tuesday told Parliament that the programme to resettle the people of Owabi would soon begin.

The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) has taken up the issue, and a series of discussions has been held between the RCC and the chiefs of the Owabi area to have the people resettled outside the catchment area.

The Minister said this when he was responding to a question asked by Mr. James Adusei-Sarkodie, NPP-Atwima Nwabiagya as to what plans the Ministry of Works and Housing has to evacuate and resettle the people of Owabi should there be serious flooding or a burst of the dam.

Alhaji Idri explained that the people of Owabi had expressed the desire to be resettled and suggested a location near the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) staff quarter, which was found unsuitable. They later suggested an area, which was also unfortunately falls within the catchment area of the dam and that was not allowed. The Minister said he has been liaising with the Ashanti Regional Minister, and the indications are that the programme would soon take off.
