Professor asks opposition members to apologize to JAK

A former senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -KNUST?s Department of Engineering has asked members of the National Democratic Congress -NDC and their allies to unreservedly apologize to Ghanaians and President John Kufuor for rubbing the presidency in mud.

According to him, it is time spending and costly to become a President of Ghana who is as well the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, therefore, occupants of such positions must be respected by all and sundry.

Prof Akyeampong told the Chronicle in Kumasi with disdain about the way the pro-NDC newspapers and some members of the party unleashed scurrilous verbal attacks on President Kufuor in the recent past about the purchase of an uncompleted building behind his private residence in Accra, by his son, Chief Kufuor.

?To clad him (President) with things like hotel de Kufuor, hotel waa-waa and the rest, removes the president from the respect and reverence due him as Head of State of a sovereign nation called Ghana,? he observed and continued that such acts should not be tolerated at all.

Prof. Akyeampong contended that those engaged in such behaviour must be made to face the law or apologize since the act was not healthy and had to be condemned.

He, however, indicated that the respect and reverence for the presidency should not paint a sycophantic behaviour.

Prof. Nuama Akyeampong, who is a key draftee of the 1992 Constitution, had earlier on told the paper that President Kufuor was ?weak? to talk about those virulent and defamatory attacks against himself and the presidency because of his belief in freedom of expression.

In the view of the CPP activist, the NDC had been given a field day to orchestrate their ill-packed propaganda, but asked them to dig deep if they really wanted something against the president that could call for an impeachment.

?I have come to realize that Gissele Yajzi?s allegations against President Kufuor were baseless,? he said.
