Kranka (B/A), Aug. 26 GNA – Professor John Evans Atta-Mills, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flag Bearer, on Wednesday dismissed rumours circulating in parts of the country that some key members of the Party were planning to stage a coup d’etat.
He said: “It is not and cannot be true that, there is somebody or a group of people in our midst, planning to overthrow the Government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) through the barrel of the gun.” Prof Mills, who was addressing supporters of the NDC at Kranka in the Nkoranza District of Brong Ahafo Region as part of a week’s tour of the Region, said it was an undisputed fact that Ghanaians would vote the NPP out of power in the December polls.
He said it did not require any member of the opposition parties to talk too much to drive home the fact that, President John Agyekum Kufuor had failed the nation through bad governance.
Prof Atta Mills said there was no need for any member of the NDC to tell Ghanaians that the NPP Government had failed and the economic hardships were enough proof.
Mr Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Former Ashanti Regional Minister, said: “The hierarchy of the NDC does not think changing the Government through the barrel of the gun will be the panacea for the woes created by the NPP government.”
He said with the advent of the 1992 Constitution, Ghanaians had accepted that “democracy has come to stay and it is only through the democratic process that a Government can be changed”.
Mr Agyekum reminded Ghanaians that the NDC peacefully handed over power to the NPP after it won the Election 2000 and which Prof. Atta Mills readily conceded defeat, saying this proved that, the NDC believed in democracy.
