Prof. Millar partners Nandom District Assembly to boost Agriculture

Professor David Millar, Founder of the Millar Open University in Bolgatanga, is partnering the Nandom District Assembly in the Upper West Region, to improve on agricultural productivity in the area.

In that regard, he has established a 1,200-acre all-year-round irrigation farm along the banks of the Black Volta River that passes through the Nandom District.

The Nandom District Assembly has complemented that effort by also establishing satellite farms in five other communities along the Black Volta River at Ketuo, Dabagteng, Napaal, Sonne and Gyengyenkpe, to benefit from the project.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Wa, Mr. Cuthbert Baba Kuupiel, Nandom District Chief Executive (DCE) said the initiative was made possible out of a stakeholder development forum held by the Assembly.

He said the district was faced with unpredictable weather and rainfall pattern, coupled with migration of the youth to the south, hence, the initiative to boost agricultural production and productivity in the area.

The DCE said, the initiative, apart from boosting agricultural production and productivity, would provide employment to the teeming youth and women, thereby improving their income levels, and increase revenue for the Assembly.

Mr Kuupiel disclosed that the Assembly was rehabilitating five dug-outs in the Goziiri, Brutu, Zinuopare, Tuopari and Tukuu communities, through the support of the World Bank.

The dug-outs are going to support dry season farming, and serve as a source of drinking water for livestock.

Mr Kuupiel appealed for financial, infrastructural and equipment support from government and donor organisations, to support the expansion of Prof. Millar’s Project, to benefit more people in the area.
