Prof calls For Decriminalization of Clinical Abortion

A lecturer at the Department of Geography and University of Ghana, Legon, Prof A. F. Aryee, has stated that doctors who assist young women to undergo safe abortion should not be prosecuted.

Speaking at a one-day seminar on adolescent reproduction health issues in Accra, Prof Aryee, also of the Population Impact Project (PIP) said, young women should rather be encouraged to seek assistance from qualified doctors whenever they want to terminate a pregnancy.

?Several women are dying from abortions and instead of visiting quack doctors and herbalists, we must find a way of encouraging them to see qualified doctors?.

He explained further that all the young women who died through abortion would have been alive today if they had sought the assistance of qualified doctors in the process.
