Pro-VC urges Parliament to implement tenets of Disability Act

Winneba (C/R), Jan. 24, GNA – The Pro-Vice Chancellor (Pro-VC) of the University of Education, Winneba, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, has observed that though Parliament has passed the disability bill, there is lack of official will at the district and national levels to implement its provisions.

The situation, therefore, makes it difficult for persons with disability to hold educational institutions and service providers accountable for any lapses on their part.

The Pro-VC who is also an expert in Special and Inclusive Education, said this had resulted in the lip-service approach to the provision of Inclusive Education in the country.

Prof. Avoke expressed these sentiments in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Winneba in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region.

He noted with concern that the strategies of teaching and assessment by teachers have remained the same in spite of the diversity pupils in classrooms.

Prof. Avoke noted that this strategy of teaching and assessment often tended to favour the non-disabled individuals over those with disability and called for a reversal of the trend.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor disclosed that the University’s Pilot Inclusion Programme was yielding dividends and urged stakeholders in education to study the model to see the extent to which it could work in other schools and settings in the country.
