Private schools too need the GETFUND

Accra, March 8, GNA – Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) on Wednesday re-iterated its call to the Government to amend the Ghana Education trust Fund (GETFUND) Act to enable all private institutions to benefit from it

It said as the Act, “stands now it only benefits public educational institutions.. and this is discriminatory”.

Mr Ransford Addo, President of GUPS, said the amendment of the Law would help address some key issues affecting students pursuing professional courses.

He said it was a fact that professionals formed the engine of growth in every economy and it was when professional education was given the much needed attention and priority that that goal could be achieved. Mr Addo, who was speaking at a press conference organized as part of the activities lined-up for the National Professional Week Celebration, commended the Government for allocating buses to the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) which were under the Ministry of Information. The celebration is on the theme: Protecting Our Local Industry – The Role of the Professional.

Mr Addo bemoaned the frequent increment of school fees and high fee charges on foreign professional examinations and appealed for a change.

He said the union would hold a Professional International Summit in May this year to meet cooperate private bodies to address the issue. Mr Addo also called for the rightful placement of national service personnel in the organisations that their services were needed in line with their professional training
