Private investor pulls downs 10 houses at Adenta

About 1000 residents at Adenta near Accra, were on Friday displaced following a demolition exercise of houses and structures by a team of people purported to have been led by one Reverend Kwabena Kingdom, a private investor.

Many of the displaced people shed tears openly and as they evacuated their things from the rubble and the ruins,

Attempts by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to reach Rev. Kingdom on phone were unsuccessful as his number was said to have been switched off.

Both Mr. Kobena Ade Coker, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, and Ms Kakra Vanlare, the Adenta Municipal Chief Executive have assured the residents that the National Disaster Management Organisation would step in to provide the necessary reliefs.

Mr. Coker said his outfit and that of the MCE received distressed calls by the residents and their presence there was to commiserate with the resident.

He wondered why a Minister would incite such an exercise during the rainy season.

According to Mr. Coker, the investor would have to pay compensation to the displaced people.

Ms Vanlare, for her part wondered why the exercise was carried out despite an injunction by the State Housing Company.

Also, the Assembly was not informed prior to the demolition exercise.

A resident, Mr. Samuel Koku Avotri, said they have been at the place, which began developing when the Adenta Housing Project was being put up.

He said the stay was regularized with the necessary payment of cash and drinks by Nii Sowah Okatabu, and wondered why the demolition exercise was being carried out.**
