Prisoner flees with wedding presents

To newly-weds, Mr & Mrs Adjetey, the cheers that greeted them after they had been pronounced man and wife at the Police Church, Accra, could only have been from an assembly of well-wishers.

Little did they know that among the well-wishers was a 16 year old convict of the Borstal Institute in Accra, Nana Kwame, with an ulterior motive.

He allegedly assumed the role of an usher and allegedly managed to steal some of the wedding presents, including an envelope containing 15 million cedis, cheques of an undisclosed value and a book containing the names of donors at the ceremony.

Nana Kwame, alias Papa Krampa, was however, eventually arrested by the Police Criminal Investigations Department.

Briefing newsmen, a police source said the suspect who was serving a two-year custodial sentence, managed to get out of the Borstal Institute without the knowledge of warders and ended up at the wedding.

The source said Nana Kwame appeared in a suit and pretended to be looking after the guests.

However, during the ceremony, those at the gift table, assigned to collect the parcels, noticed that the book being used to record the donations was missing.

A report was made to the police and suspecting Nana Kwame, who had unceremoniously disappeared from the scene, they mounted a search for him and succeeded in arresting him at a hide out.

When he was searched, 2 million cedis, a suitcase and some lace materials were retrieved from him.

Nana Kwame is currently in police custody awaiting prosecution.
