Prez. Mahama Reveals Sod-Cutting for New Accra-Kumasi Expressway to Begin Early Next Year

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction of a new Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to commence early next year, marking a major step forward in Ghana’s infrastructure ambitions.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, President Mahama confirmed that the feasibility studies and design work for the expressway are now underway.

“I am happy to report to you that we will soon undertake a feasibility study and design of the new Accra-Kumasi expressway,” Mr Mahama said. “We hope to be able to cut the sod early next year for work on this transformational project to commence.”

The expressway is a key element of the government’s ‘Big Push Infrastructure Programme’, aimed at modernising Ghana’s road network and spurring economic growth.

Once completed, the new highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi, the country’s two largest cities while improving road safety and opening up economic opportunities along the route.

The announcement comes amid growing calls for improved transport infrastructure to match Ghana’s expanding economy and urbanisation.

The project is also seen as a strategic move to enhance regional integration, reduce the pressure on the existing Accra-Kumasi road, and improve logistics for trade and agriculture across the middle belt.

President Mahama’s comments signal the government’s renewed commitment to long-term development and reflect the growing urgency to address transportation bottlenecks.

Further details on funding and timeline are expected in the coming months as the feasibility phase progresses.
