President Nkrumah honoured

Accra, Sept. 21, GNA – Four wreaths were on Tuesday laid at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra in honour of the memory of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, President of the First Republic of Ghana.

Professor Kofi Awoonor, Presidential Aid laid the first wreath on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana while Dr Kenneth Kaunda, former President of Zambia laid one for the African Liberation Fighters.

Alhaji Huudu Yahaya, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) laid one on behalf of the Progressive Alliance with Professor Jacub U. Gordon of the University of Kansas, United States laying the other for Africans in diaspora.

The ceremony forms part of activities marking the 90th birth day of Dr Nkrumah. Dr Kaunda in a brief statement described Dr Nkrumah as an “African Liberator .”

He said today marks a significant milestone in the annals of African political history because it was the day on which the liberator was born. Dr Kaunda then sang a song “there is victory for us, there is victory for us”, in the name of Great Africa, there is victory for us, forward ever, backward never” ….

He then chanted the slogan “One Ghana, One Nation,” “One Africa, One Liberation” with the gathering made up of members and supporters of the NDC, the Democratic Peoples Party, Liberated Nkrumaist Brigade and the Veranda Boys and Girls joining him.

Alhaji Yahaya said Dr Nkrumah helped to shape the destiny of Ghana, Africa and all blacks in the world. He said the modern generation of Ghana and Africa will continue with the good works of Dr Nkrumah, Dr Kaunda and other African leaders.
