Abuja, Jan. 11, GNA- President John Evans Atta Mills on Saturday made his maiden trip outside Ghana, to Nigeria, three days after his inauguration and indicated his readiness to regulate the frequency of foreign trips during his tenure.
” I’ll travel when I believe its really necessary,” President Atta Mills told journalists, after joining other ECOWAS Heads of State at the Extraordinary Summit of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, in Abuja, Nigeria.
He said, he had been able to “kill a few birds with one stone” with his first travel.
President Atta Mill’s presence at the Summit which discussed largely troubles in the Republic of Guinea following the death of President Lanssana Conte last year was at the instance of ECOWAS Chairman President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
However, President Atta Mills said the occasion was also used to thank fellow Presidents for their presence at his inauguration ceremony, their messages of solidarity and felicitations and also to show appreciation to the ECOWAS Election Observer Team at Ghana’s last polls. A message read by Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe, on behalf of the Authority, congratulated the Ghanaian President on his victory at the recent polls and his successful inauguration as President and further wished him a successful tenure.
The Leaders also lauded Ghana for the matured manner in which it conducted the last elections, the fifth after it retuned to constitutional rule since 1992.
President Atta Mills said improvement in internal security would be one of the top priorities of his administration and promised to come out soon with the list of the personalities to work with him. He was assertive that Ghana was rich in human resources and that there was no lack of persons within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fill responsible positions in the Government, and nobody faltered the NDC for the quality of persons who administered the affairs of the nation dururing the NDC’s time in power for two successful terms.
“Ghana is rich very rich in human resources. We have the people,” President Mills said.
Among those on President Atta Mills’ entourage were Mr Mahama Ayariga, Presidential Spokesman, and Mr. Victor Gbeho, Chairman of the International Relations Sub Committee of the Transitional Team. 11 Jan. 08
