Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has directed the Auditor-General to conduct a forensic audit into all financial and operational activities related to the organisation of the 2023 African Games held in Accra.
The directive seeks to ensure accountability and transparency in the management of public funds and resources used for hosting the continental event.
According to the Presidency, the audit will cover all aspects of the Games from procurement and infrastructure development to operational expenditures and sponsorship deals, with a focus on identifying any irregularities or mismanagement.
President Mahama emphasised that the move reflects his government’s commitment to transparency and prudent financial governance, particularly in major national projects.
The audit comes months after Ghana successfully hosted the 13th African Games, which brought together thousands of athletes from across the continent. While the event was widely praised for its organisation and facilities, questions have since been raised about cost overruns and contract transparency.
The Auditor-General is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the Presidency upon completion of the audit.
