President Kufuor receives AU Audit feedback report

Accra, Jan. 25, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday received a feedback report on the 250-paged document produced by the Professor Adebayo Adedeji-headed Audit Panel that examined the capacity of the African Union (AU) organs to implement the proposed continental Union Government.

The Panel, on the directive of the AU Chairman President Kufuor, held discussions on the audit document with Heads of State and officials of four out of the five countries mandated by the July Accra Summit to look at the road map for political integration. These are Libya, Senegal, Gabon and Uganda. South Africa completes the list but the members could not make it to Pretoria. This comes ahead of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government to take place in Addis Ababa next week. Professor Adedeji said the discussions were useful and that reactions to the document were generally positive.

He said he was hopeful that it would guide the political leaders to make a good start at their forthcoming summit. President Kufuor thanked the Panel for the good job done and said he had sent notices to his colleague Heads of the five nations to converge in Addis Ababa to discuss the document and take a common position ahead of the summit.

He invited the Panel members to be on the standby to provide the needed technical interpretations should that become necessary during the deliberations of the five Heads of State. The Accra Summit recommended the carrying out of an extensive audit of the organs of the AU as the regional political integration agenda took centre stage.
