President Kufuor Off To Abuja

President John Agyekum Kufuor leave Accra today to attend the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union (AU) in Abuja, Nigeria.

President Kufuor would also chair the AU High-Level Committee of Heads of State and Government on the Non-Aggression Pact and the Common Defence and Security in Africa meeting scheduled for Abuja on January 29.

Other members of the Committee are the Heads of State of Algeria; Republic of Congo; Ethiopia and South Africa. It also has Mozambique, the immediate past Chairman of the Africa Union as Ex-Officio Member.

A statement issued in Accra on Thursday and signed by Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Press Secretary to the President and Presidential Spokesman, said the agenda for the two-day Summit would include a review of the food security situation on the Continent.

Others are the status of implementation of previous decisions and declarations on HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, other related infectious diseases and eradication of poliomyelitis.

The statement said the Leaders would also appraise the peace and security situation in Africa and the challenges facing the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) policy initiatives. It said Libya had also proposed for study by the Summit the cancellation of customs between member states and harmonization of tariffs.
