President Kufuor attends CHOGM Meeting

Abuja, Dec.7, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor arrived in Abuja, Nigeria on Thursday to attend this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

He was accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Theresa Kufuor and the Foreign Minister, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s High Commissioner in Britain, Mr Isaac Osei.

The three-day Meeting, which was under the theme” Development and Democracy-Partnership for Peace and Prosperity” was opened on Friday, by Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Other speakers at the meeting would include, out-going Chairman of the Commonwealth, Mr John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia and the in-coming Chairman and host President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria.

Mr Donald McKinnon, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth would also address the meeting.

The biennial meeting would be attended by Heads of Government and representatives of 52 member countries.

They would discuss the inter-connection between democracy and development and receive a report from the Commonwealth Expert Group on these issues,

Political issues, implementation of the Commonwealth Plan of Action on Terrorism, progress in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and challenges facing small states were also likely to be on the meeting’s agenda.
