President commended for resolving agric challenges

Mr Bright Edward Kodzo Demordzi, the Member of Parliament for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom, has commended President John Dramani Mahama, for his inspiring State of the Nation’s Address.

He said the address had resolved all major challenges facing the agricultural sector.

Mr Demordzi, who is a member of the Committee on Food Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, told the GNA in an interview, that the President’s determination to provide 50,000 seedlings to cocoa farmers and his readiness to assist the Scientific and Industrial Research Institute to come out with new varieties and provide subsidies for the seeds was commendable.

Mr Demordzi said he was impressed about the President’s commitment to give out 180,000 metric tonnes of subsidised fertilizer to farmers in the 2015 crop season.

He said 1,000 trucks had been imported to be disbursed to the districts to set up agricultural mechanization centres across the country through commercial agricultural projects, adding that the private sector was being supported to put up warehouses in the major rice and maize growing areas to help reduce post-harvest losses which currently stood at 20 to 30 percent.

He said the government had also put up cold storage facilities at Nyanyano, Kumantey, Elmina and Takoradi to help store fish in those communities.

Mr Demordzi congratulated the Minister for Fisheries for the intention to establish an insurance scheme for fisher folks in the country.
