President asked to consider a woman as IGP

Takoradi, Jan.15, GNA – The Ghana Timber Association has commended President John Evans Atta Mills on his victory and expressed the hope that he would steer the affairs of the nation to ensure the growth of businesses in all sectors of the economy.

The national treasurer of the GTA, Mr Isaac Nketia, who delivered the goodwill message on behalf of the Association, advised Ghanaians to burry their political differences and rally behind the President. Workers, he advised, should eschew all negative attitudes toward work to enhance productivity.

While commending President Mills for selecting a woman as the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Nketia appealed to him to also appoint a woman as the Inspector General of Police to complete the desire for gender balance in the administration of state institutions. Mr Nketia, an ex-Police officer, told the Ghana News Agency at Takoradi that the current deputy IGP, Mrs. Elizabeth Mills-Robertson, was qualified for the job because she had acquired enough experience and deserved to be elevated.

He noted that no woman had ever headed the Ghana Police Service and said it was time a woman was considered for the position. He expressed regret that Mrs. Mills-Robertson was not short-listed for the post though she had served as a deputy for several years. Mr. Nketia also appealed to President Mills to appoint a knowledgeable person to head the Ministry of Lands, Forestry and Mines since that Ministry is a “sensitive” one. 15 Jan. 09
