Presbyterian Church of Ghana appoints new Acting Moderator

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has appointed the Ga Presbytery Chairperson Reverend Victor Oko Abbey, as the acting Moderator.

He takes over from Reverend George Opare-Kwapong, Akuapem Presbytery Chairman, who was appointed to act as the substantive Moderator Reverend Professor Cephas Narh Omenyo is on sick leave.

Per the standing orders of the General Assembly, an acting Moderator must be a member of the General Assembly Council in the capacity as a presbytery chairman and Reverend Kwapong’s term of office as Akuapem Presbytery Chairman ends at the close of August.

This means that from September, he ceases to be a general council member, hence the appointment of Reverend Oko Abbey, to hold the fort.

Right Reverend Professor Omenyo was overwhelmingly elected as the 17th Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church at the 16th General Assembly at Abetifi last year to succeed Right Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, who ended his six year tenure.

On December 4, he was inducted to office and subsequently began his constitutional functions but in May 2017, he was suddenly taken ill whilst on an official assignment in the United Kingdom.
