Pre-school teachers attend workshop on new curriculum

Nkawie-Ashanti, Nov. 29, GNA 96 Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, Atwima-Nwabiagya District Director of Education has observed that the wrong application of teaching methods and techniques by teachers especially at the pre-school level usually have serious consequences on the academic pursuit of pupils.

He said the affected pupils usually become liability to the family and the nation.

Mr Obeng-Darko made the observation when addressing the opening session of a three-day workshop on capacity building for Early Childhood Development for 180 pre-school teachers in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District at Nkawie on Tuesday.

Organised by Atwima-Nwabiagya District Education Directorate, the workshop was sponsored by Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Topics discussed included psycho-social skills, creative activities, physical education, numeracy, literacy, environmental studies and cultural activities.

Mr Obeng-Darko advised the participants to carefully and properly promote the sound academic and moral growth of the pre-school child through the effective and efficient adoption and use of the play way methods and techniques.

He condemned the practice of some professionally trained public school teachers who sent their wards to private institutions and said, =93It casts a slur on the integrity and professional competence of the public school teacher=94.

Mr Obeng-Darko, however, attributed this to poor supervision and monitoring and entreated heads of basic schools, circuit supervisors and other stakeholders to intensify and strengthen their management roles. Madam Irene Comfort Badu, Early Childhood Co-ordinator, said the workshop formed part of orientation programmes to ensure the successful implementation of the new education reforms programme.

Mr Baffour Asare-Bediako, an Assistant Director of Education, asked teachers to instil discipline and moral values in the pupils and lead lives worthy of emulation.
