Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has described as inconsequential the attitude of some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) towards former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Some members of the Minority in Parliament have expressed grave displeasure at the decision of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani to grace the occasion of the rebranding of Merchant Bank, now Universal Merchant Bank.
To them, President Kufuor’s presence at the occasion is a tacit endorsement of the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz Equity Fund since the party was against the sale.
“I think sometimes, some of our leaders are very petty; very very petty,” Kwesi Pratt said on ‘Kokrokoo’.
The seasoned journalist pointed out that any occasion the former President graces with his presence, he does so mainly “as a former Head of State”.
“The former President, on 7th January, was at the inauguration of President Mahama; does it mean he had accepted that the elections were free and fair? It doesn’t mean that…going to the rebranding of Merchant Bank; does it mean that he accepts everything that went on? It doesn’t mean that…the reasons why he goes there are totally different. This is a former Head of State for goodness sake. Former head of state who is continually gaining respect…” he added.
Kwesi Pratt advised the NPP to use the respect that Mr. Kufuor has gained over the years to the good of the party instead of continuously criticizing every activity that he embarks on especially when it is against the position of the NPP.
“The NPP should be thinking of how to use the image and good repute that the former President has attained to the advantage of the party instead of using his activities to destroy him; criticizing him here and there. We can all disagree with former President Kufuor; I disagree with him on several issues, but we should show him some respect,” he demanded.
