PPP justifies suit against EC

The Progressive People’s Party says its decision to sue the Electoral Commission over its failure to run the Kwabre west and Walensi by-elections is not intended to frustrate the EC in its planning as it is being speculated in sections of the media.

Four political parties including the NPP and NDC dragged the EC to court to restrain the commission from using the old voters register in conducting the by elections.

General Secretary of the PPP, Kofi Asamoah in an interview with XYZ News said the suit is to seek clarifications from the court if the commission was right in shirking its constitutional duty of running the by-elections on the account of a court suit against it by the four political parties.

“We [PPP] are saying that in a situation where the Electoral Commission has a mandate to perform and because of an omission either on the part of Parliament or the EC itself to make provisions to safeguard the old register, and the people of Wulensi and Kwabre are denied representation in Parliament, that constitutional matter resides at the Supreme Court for proper interpretation” Mr. Asamoah said.
