Power cuts outside schedule periods

Hohoe, May 9, GNA- Mr Clemence Akpeloo, Volta Regional Maintenance Engineer of the Electricity Company of Ghana has said the power cuts in Hohoe district outside the scheduled curtailments originate from the Volta River Authority (VRA) who are the bulk suppliers of power. He said it happens when there is shortfall in supply expected at the time necessitating the bulk suppliers to hold power to certain areas.

Mr Akpeloo, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Hohoe on Tuesday said the VRA mechanism, which shuts itself when output drops is to prevent the generating system from total collapse.

He said the situation was not peculiar to Hohoe alone but was being experienced countrywide.

Residents of Hohoe experienced unusual power cuts spanning four hours on May 3 and 7 this year.

Mr Akpeloo explained that such curtailments did not come from the ECG, which only distributes what is available to it from the wholesaler He therefore asked consumers to disabuse their minds of the notion that the ECG was responsible for such power cuts and that the ECG and VRA would not play tricks.

Mr Akpeloo assured consumers that all was being done to find the energy to meet the shortfall in supply to met the needs of the people. 09 May 07
