Potentials of mentally handicapped enormous-Specialists

Ekuasi (W/R), Jan. 16, GNA – Madam Agnes Frimponmaa, a specialist teacher at the Twin City Special School said the potentials of the mentally handicapped could be harnessed for societal development if they were given specialist education.

She said many parents with disabled children feel down hearted, humiliated and unwilling to assist such children to develop their potentials.

Madam Frimponmaa said these at the presentation of items to the school by the Sekondi branch of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) on Sunday.

They received student’s mattresses, detergents, toiletries, and soap all valued at five million cedis.

She hinted that many disabled persons had been assisted by the school to undertake several homes chores, sewing, tie and dye and other functions.

Madam Frimponmaa said disability is not inability and the society must change its negative attitude to people with disabilities. “What these children need most is love, friendship, trust and social inclusion”, she stressed.

Pastor Patience Addai, in-charge of ICGC said the presence of the disabled in society was not a curse but sometimes it is meant to test ones trust in the Lord.

She appealed to parents with disabled children to send them to any of the specialist schools in the country for assistance to make them part of the society.

Pastor Addai said the presentation forms part of the churches annual assistance to disabled persons in the country.

She therefore, appealed to churches, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other philanthropists to come to the aid of the school.
