Ports and Harbours Authority Management Agrees With Casual Workers

The 3,700 casual labourers at the Tema Port resumed work on Thursday to enable the port to discharge its duties to importers and exporters and to ships that had called at the port within the past two days.

The casuals had on Tuesday withdrawn their services in protest against unfair treatment.

The Management of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) on Wednesday agreed to meet their demands, which included the payment of some allowances to the 3,700 casual labourers.Mr Ben Owusu-Mensah, Director-General of GPHA, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Tema, said the casuals were also to enjoy a ‘hand-shake’ paid to workers to commemorate the 15th anniversary of GPHA’s merger. Staff of the GPHA were paid theirs during the first week of August.
