Porter jailed for attempting to escape from custody

Kumasi, Dec. 19, GNA – A circuit court in Kumasi last Thursday sentenced a 23-year-old porter to three years imprisonment in hard labour for attempting to escape from lawful custody. Yaba Anarfo, a porter at the New Tafo (Krofofrom) Lorry Park was convicted on his own plea.

Police Chief Inspector Francis K Kusi told the court presided over by Mr R M Kogyapwah that the convict who was serving a 12-month prison term, was transferred from the Kumasi Central Prison in August this year to the Amanfrom Prison Camp.

He said Anarfo escaped from jail with only two weeks left for him to complete serving his sentence.

Chief Inspector Kusi said on December 12 this year, the accused was re-arrested for theft and was therefore locked in police cell. The prosecution said on December 14, when the cell door was opened for the cleaner who had finished cleaning the cell to get out, Anarfo, who was also known as Ziaba Anarfo at the time of his first sentence, took advantage of the open door, pushed the cleaner aside and attempted to run out of the charge office.

Chief Inspector Kusi said the police on duty, however, managed to arrest him.
