Porter jailed 25 years for defilement

Kumasi, June 28, GNA – A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 40-year-old porter at Antoa in the Kwabre East District to 25 years in hard labour for defiling a 12-year-old girl.

Owusu Banahene pleaded guilty to the offence.

Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that both the convict and victim live at Antoa.

On May 22, at about 1400 hours, Banahene asked the girl to help him carry some items including flour and edible oil to a house on the outskirts of the town and she obliged.

The prosecution said when they got there, nobody was present in the building and the convict took advantage of the situation to sexually assault the girl.

He warned that he would invoke a curse on her if she told anybody about her ordeal.

Some days later, the victim fell sick and was taken to the hospital where it was detected that she had been defiled.

The girl mentioned Banahene’s name and he was arrested.
