Porter in court for causing abortion

Accra Aug. 10, GNA – A 24-year-old porter, who gave concoctions to her colleague to abort her five-month pregnancy on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Andan Abubakari, the porter, whose plea was not taken is facing charges of abetment of crime and causing abortion.

The court has remanded her into prison custody to reappear on August 17. Andan’s colleague, Fati Alhassan is currently receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The court, which doubted Andan’s age, ordered the Police to ascertain her age, since she looked younger than her age. Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Alice Takyiwah told the court that the complainant was the Principal Medical Officer of the Usher Fort Polyclinic.

The Prosecution said on August 1,2005 the Police were informed about the abortion incident and went to the Clinic. On arrival they found Fati weeping and complaining of abdominal pains. Fati disclosed that that it was Andan, who gave her some concoction to get rid of her pregnancy. Andan admitted giving her friend the concoction but denied administering it.
