Poor turn out on first day of registration exercise

Sekondi, March 16 GNA – Mr Reginald Amihere, Western Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced that the Commission had employed the services of 4,478 registration officers and assistants in the ongoing Voter Register and Identification Card Replacement exercise in the Region.

He said 2,239 registration centres have been established throughout the Region to ensure: “A very smooth and efficient registration of all qualified voters.”

Mr Amihere, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Sekondi said materials for the exercise were dispatched early to all the 11 districts in the Region to avoid any delays and the shortages. He said Supervisors have been engaged by the EC to monitor the process throughout the county.

Registration at some centres, visited by the GNA between 0900 hours and 1300 hours, at Takoradi, Sekondi and Essikadu, was quite discouraging. Only few people in queues could be seen at centres at Well Road, in Sekondi, Essikadu Catholic Primary School and other centres.
