Poor performance of Women in district elections in Wa

Wa, Sept 27, GNA – Miss Comfort Adia Mumuni, a teacher, and one of the four female candidates who contested for seats in the Wa Municipal Assembly, broke the traditional male dominance in the area by defeating two male opponents at the Zongo Electoral Area.

However, three other female candidates that contested the poll with men at Dobile Government Residential Area and Kanbali electoral areas, failed to win.

Mr Abdullah Bin Salih, Upper West Regional Director of the Non-Formal Division of the Ministry of Education Science and Sports, won the Dondoli Electoral area seat, where pre-election campaigns were characterized by open insults and recriminations among supporters of the two opposing camps.

Four incumbent Assembly men – Sulemani Adams for Boli electoral area, Seth Panwum for Government Residential Area, Abass Alhaji Sena and Iddrisu Adams for Kabanye and Kperisi electoral areas respectively, retained their seats.

Mohammed Kpegla, Seidu Ibraihim and Lamin Bin Yussif were all declared unopposed at Busa, Jonga and Tagirayiri/Jengbeyiri electoral areas.

Apart from minor incidents at some polling stations such as Environmental “B”, Sing in the Kabanye and Boli electoral areas respectively and Dondoli, the elections in the Municipality were generally peaceful. No serious irregularities have so far been reported although some losing candidates have been complaining of mass transfer of votes from one electoral area to the other to influence the results.
