Agona Swedru, Jan 23, GNA – A total of 71 out of 105 Polling Station Chairmen in the Agona West Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have declared their support for the incumbent, Mr Samuel Kweku Obodai, to stand in the 2004 parliamentary election.
Speaking at a news conference at the Agona Swedru Town Hall on Friday, Mr Andrews Kwesi Cann, spokesman for the group, said they decided to throw their weight behind the MP for a second term to enable him continue his good work in promoting development in the constituency. They noted that the area had never retuned an MP for a second term since the First Republic, which he blamed on “impatience and ill will” and said the practice had negative effects on the development of the constituency.
The NPP wrestled the seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2000 election.
Mr Cann said that the Polling Station Chairmen decided to support the MP to complete and consolidate development projects he had initiated including the fencing of the Swedru Government Hospital and the construction of staff quarters estimated at 400 million cedis. Other projects Mr Obodai initiated include the construction of a Nurses’ quarters and a school block valued at 380 million cedis at Ofenkorang and streetlights at Agona Swedru, Nyakrom, Nkum, Bobikuma and Kwamang estimated at 200 million cedis.
Mr Cann commended the MP for supporting the establishment of an FM Station, the installation of traffic lights and the opening of a branch of Melcom stores, at Agona Swedru.
He also praised him for maintaining good relations with the chiefs, the youth and the public.
