Politician condemns vote buying

Kukurantumi (E/R), Nov. 7, GNA – The National Organiser of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has condemned what he described as “vote buying and showering of money on the electorate to influence them”.

He alleged that there was open vote-buying in the Abuakwa North Constituency and described it as unprecedented in the political history of the country.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo, who was addressing Keep-Fit Clubs in the Constituency in Kukurantumi, said the large-scale vote buying in the area had made a number of political scientists to focus on the Constituency.

He said such developments only led to the election of “Parliamentarians who do not feel responsible to the people, who elected them because the Parliamentarians feel that they had paid for the votes of the electorate and so have nothing to do with them”.

He, therefore, called on the electorate in Abuakwa North to be careful of the fellow they would elect to represent them in Parliament. The Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr Fred Ohene-Kena explained that, the Constitution of the country allowed any elected government to rule the country for four years.

He said after the four years, the Government had to come to account to the people and if the people felt that that party had perform well then they would renew its mandate.

Mr Ohene-Kena said the Government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had not perform to the expectations of the people and so he called on them to vote against it and vote for NDC in Election 2004. Mr Simon Peter Asirifi, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Abuakwa North Constituency, called on the people not to sell their votes but to vote for him and the NDC to take care of their interest.
