Policeman Shoots Taxi-Driver

A policeman, on Friday night shot and wounded a taxi driver in the process of causing his arrest for a traffic offence.

The taxi driver was alleged to have made an illegal turning in front of the Police Hospital in Accra – an action that attracted the policeman who was standing close by.

According to eyewitnesses account, the policeman stopped the taxi driver but he refused and instead sped off towards the Osu Danquah Circle.

The police officer caught up with him at the Danquah circle and allegedly shot at the taxi from behind but the bullet hit the driver in the ribs.

An Eyewitness, Prince Koomson told Joy News that he was standing around the police hospital area around 8:19 pm when he saw a policeman stop a taxi driver who had made a U-turn in front of the hospital.

He said the policeman who was trying to apprehend the driver came to stand in front of the taxi again telling the driver to stop but he refused.

Mr Koomson said the policeman then tried to shoot the back tyre of the taxi when the bullet hit the driver in the ribs.

He added that it was after the policeman had shot at the car that he saw the taxi driver was hurt and was lying on the ground after the car had stopped.

When Joy News visited the scene of the incident, the driver had been sent to the Police Hospital where he is currently on admission.

The Cantonments Police confirmed the incident to Joy News.
