Policeman arrested for driving under influence of alcohol

Accra, Jan. 31, GNA – Police Chief Inspector Anthony Amponsah on Monday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He pleaded not guilty to careless and inconsiderate driving, negligently causing harm and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was granted 60 million cedis bail to re-appear on February 22. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Cecilia Yeboah told the court that the accused, who was driving a BMW saloon car on August 30 2005 on the Kojo Thompson Road towards Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra failed to stop at a traffic light and ran into a Mitsubishi saloon car ahead of him. The two vehicles were damaged.

Police Chief Inspector Yeboah said three occupants on the vehicles received injuries and were rushed to the Police and Ridge Hospitals where they were treated and discharged. She said further investigation revealed that the accused was driving under the influence of alcohol.
