The Police Administration on Thursday said it has noted with concern the importation of certain categories of prohibited explosives into the country apparently towards the Christmas festivities.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Kwesi Ofori, said the Public order act of 1999 states inter-alia, that no person shall manufacture or possess or carry fire crackers (knockout), display shells, artillery shell, and ball and canister shell.
The statement said the police administration wishes to remind the general public that the law prohibiting the possession of the explosives is still in force.
It said paragraph 4 of the law states that a police officer may arrest without warrant a person when he suspects on reasonable grounds, of possessing, carrying or being in control of any explosive in contravention of the instrument.
The statement said the Police would after this announcement embarked on intensive search to retrieve any prohibited explosives.
It said persons who have any of the mentioned explosives commit an offence and are liable on a summary conviction to a fine not exceeding five million cedis or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both.
