Police warn against lynching suspected criminals

The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, has advised the public to desist from lynching suspected armed robbers and other criminals in their communities.

He said such actions deprived the Police the opportunity of gathering the necessary information in their investigations, explaining that, clues that could even lead to the arrest of other criminals were destroyed.

He said it could also lead to the death of innocent people.

ASP Tawiah gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, on Tuesday in Sunyani, about the lynching of two suspected armed robbers in June this year.

He said the suspected robbers, believed to be in their 20s, were lynched by some residents at separate locations, Penkwase and Berlin Top in the Sunyani Municipality and the Sunyani West District, respectively.

ASP Tawiah said the Police had information about the lynching of the first suspect in early June at Penkwase, went to the scene and found sticks and stones around him with bruises all over his body.

He said on June 23, the second suspect was also found dead with several wounds on his body.

ASP Tawiah said the bodies had been deposited at the Sunyani Government Hospital for autopsy and identification.

He appealed to the public to assist in identifying them for burial by their families.
