Police to stop AFAG ‘mieku’ demo

The Ghana Police Service says they will not be providing personnel for the ‘massive mieku’ demonstration scheduled by the Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG), a pressure group.

The group has set Thursday, April 18, 2013 as the new date for its much awaited demonstration against government, after several consultations with the police, it claims.

However, speaking in an interview on Wednesday, ASP Freeman Tetteh, Greater Accra Public Relations Officer indicated that due to the heavy police personnel that will be dispatched to the Supreme Court during the hearing of the election petition, the much anticipated ‘demo’ cannot hold.

“Both parties agreed for the demonstration to take place on the 18th of April but later, our attention was drawn to CI 74 which indicates that if the Supreme Court reaches the main hearing of the election petition, they will be sitting everyday and most often when they meet, we dispatch majority of our personnel there…

Looking at the number of people AFAG is expecting to join in the demonstration, it will be difficult to get assistance from the police service. Even though they are not accepting our current position, we have no choice than to compel them to reschedule or go for a court order to stop them”.

According to him, the only option now is to reschedule the demonstration to a date when the Supreme Court is not sitting so that enough personnel will help in the demonstration.
