Police to clamp down on unlicensed motorbikes

Accra, Dec. 25, GNA – A nationwide operation is be launched next year to apprehend and prosecute unlicensed motorbike riders, Nana Owusu-Nsiah, Inspector General of Police (IGP), said on Friday.

Speaking at a soiree organized by the Accra Regional Police Command for the Press and personnel of the Night Patrol teams of the Service in Accra, he urged motorists to be extra careful to avoid fatal accidents associated with the yuletide period.

“We expect drivers to dutifully adhere to road traffic regulations to ensure sanity on our roads,” the IGP said.

Nana Owusu-Nsiah commended the cordial relation between the Police and the media and called for more cooperation to combat crime. He said, “We have come very far in our efforts of maintaining peace and protecting life and property but must not rest on our oars.

Criminals everywhere are opportunists and the will capitalise on every single security lapse to perpetuate crime.”

The IGP stressed the need for extra vigilance in the protection of life and property and asked travellers and property owners to be extra cautious, saying, they should not carry huge sums of money without proper security protection.

He explained that the night patrols were to reduce crime and said effective patrolling depended on the alertness of Police personnel since criminal activities could not be isolated from normal human conduct and appealed for media support.

Present at the get-together were Mrs Elizabeth Mills-Robertson, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Administration, Mr David Asante-Apeatu, Director of the Criminal Investigations Department and the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Kofi Baokye. 25 Dec 04
