Police To Clamp Down On Obscene Materials

The Police Administration is going to embark on a nationwide clampdown on producers of obscene materials in the media and those caught will be dealt with.

A statement issued by the Police Administration in Accra yesterday expressed the hope that the exercise would not be seen as a move to curtail the freedom of the media but to instil discipline by implementing the law.

?Section 280 of the Criminal Code states that whoever publishes or offer for sale any obscene book, writing or representation shall be guilty of misdemeanour?, it said.

The statement said the attention of the police had been drawn to the proliferation of obscene materials in the Ghanaian media, especially the print media in recent times.

The practice, it noted, had attained such a proportion that it had attracted public outcry.

For that reason and the consequences it held for the nation, the statement called on the perpetrators of the act to desist from it because the publication or exhibition of obscenities was a crime
