Police support retired officers

Accra, May 10, GNA – The Ghana Police Service on Tuesday presented two cheques totalling 180 million Cedis to the National Association of Retired Police Officers (NARPO) to support members to engage in revenue generation projects.

The money raised through voluntary contributions by serving Police Officers, is to assist the Association to put up a permanent hostel and guest facility to accommodate members who visit Accra.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Patrick Acheampong, who presented the cheques to the Association at a ceremony at the Police Headquarters in Accra, said it was time for serving Police Officers to recognise the need to help retired colleagues to cope with life.

“We must realise that we will some day join them out there, so we must strive to make life more meaningful for them after leaving the service honourably.”

Mr Christopher Dewornu, a Former IGP and President of the Association expressed appreciation for the donation, saying “we are filled with happiness for the money because it will support our efforts to be self-financing”.

In another development, the Old Vandals Association of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon called on Mr Acheampong, who is a member of the Association to congratulate him on his appointment as the substantive IGP.

Mr Percival Kuranchie, Leader of the delegation and a Past President of the Association, said the appointment of the IGP had made the “Vandals” proud, saying: “We would be happy to bask in the glory he would bring to the Police Service”.

He exhorted the IGP to be guided by the Halls motto: “Truth Stands” and to serve as an inspiration not only to the Police Service but also to all Vandals.
