Accra, Sept 13, GNA – Mr Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), on Tuesday met sections of the police service at an emergency conference to devise strategies to curb the increasing rate of road accidents in the country.
The conference was attended by personnel from the Regional, Divisional, District and the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU) and commanders from the Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Central, Volta, Tema and the Ashanti regions.
Opening the one-day emergency conference, Mr Acheampong said the meeting would seek to evaluate tactical operations of the MTTU based on environmental peculiarities that affect traffic management.
The meeting would also discuss plans and share ideas about programmes and activities that will assist in reducing road accidents. ”The meeting will also provide the service the opportunity to work out more effective traffic management strategies and to share ideas on the implementation of the New Road Safety Act (683).”
Mr Acheampong advised personnel of the MTTU not to regard themselves as people responsible for checking only road traffic offences but to be part of the police to help reduce the rate of armed robbery in the country.
“Do not think of yourself as MTTU personnel concerned with the checking of road traffic offences but go a step further to look out for arms and ammunitions and inspect suspicious cars so that you will be involved in the bigger fight against armed robbery.”
