Police pull out of Donkorkrom

The Ghana Police Service has announced that no personnel will be stationed at Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region until the locals rebuild the police station that they torched and decimated on Thursday during a protest march.

The decision was announced by the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Prosper Ablorh, at a press conference at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Friday August 19.

The Police Service has also vowed to arrest the ring leaders who staged the protests and destroyed several properties in the town.

The residents had staged a demonstration to register their displeasure with the police over the escape of two police officers and a civilian, who were arrested for their involvement in a botched heist of a GCB Bank bullion van.

Fourteen people were shot by police officers as they took part in the demonstration that turned rowdy as the demonstrators besieged the police station and torched the place.

The residents, according to reports, surged on the officers, despite the firing of warning shots and tear gas, a situation that caused the officers to open fire on them.

Meanwhile, the three suspects involved in the robbery attacked have been re-arrested and are being processed for court.
