The Accra Regional Police Command has opened investigations into violent clashes that disrupted the climax of this year’s Homowo Festival at Anyaa-Sowutuom on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, police said the disturbances broke out during the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the ceremonial meal of the festival.
A misunderstanding between followers of two rival chiefs reportedly sparked gunfire, throwing the celebration into turmoil. The violence later spilled over into nearby Olebu, where more attacks occurred as some attendees attempted to leave the grounds.
Three people—identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu; Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan; and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo—lost their lives. Their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Four others sustained injuries. They include Enoch Amevor, who has since been treated and discharged, as well as Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, popularly called Nii Obrafour. The injured are currently receiving care at facilities including Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.
In response, police have stepped up deployment in the area to maintain calm while intelligence-led operations are underway to track down and arrest those involved.
The command has further cautioned traditional leaders and their supporters to strictly comply with agreed security arrangements to prevent a recurrence of such violence.
