Police ordered to arrest floating drivers

Agona Swedru, Oct. 25, GNA – The Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit MTTU of Ghana Police Service, Assistance Commissioner of Police (ACP) Victor Tandoh has directed MTTU personnel to arrest drivers who do not belonged to any union.

He said those found to be picking passengers at unauthorized spots and thus causing nuisance and accidents on the road, do not pay lorry park tolls and other development levies for the renovation lorry stations.

ACP. Tandoh, who gave the directive at the launching of the road safety campaign at Agona Swedru said these drivers are also found to be causing carnage on the highways.

ACP. Tandoh, who did not give accident statistics for 2006, however, said that in 2005 a total of 1,403 people died in 12 903 accident cases involving 19,222 vehicles. According to him a total of 10,136 persons got injured in 2005. ACP. Tandoh stated that in 2004 a total of 1,907 people died in 14,734 accident cases, adding that 12,449 persons injured involving 21,483 vehicles.

DSP. Festus Guh, Swedru Divisional MTT Police Commander cautioned drivers who do not load at the lorry stations to acts before they are caught.

He said the MTTU personnel at Swedru would intensify their road checks regularly to weed out rickety cars on the roads in the division to ensure safety of passengers and property.
