Police okay political parties demonstration in the Northern Region

The Northern Regional Police Command has given the green light to organisers of Coalition of Opposition Political Parties in the Northern Region to demonstrate today.

The police assured that the demonstration will not affect the security of the President John Dramani Mahama who will be in Salaga and not in Tamale where the demonstration is currently underway.

Tension was brewing over the weekend when the police told organisers of the planned demonstration to postpone the date as it will coincide with the president’s visit to the Region.

The demonstrators comprising various opposition parties resolved to protest against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the hardships bedeviling the people of the North.

The demonstration is dubbed ‘Di mi ya’ (times are hard).
But speaking on Ultimate breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, the Northern Regional Police Command DCOP Ken Yeboah explained that police officers have been assigned to man the demonstration.

‘The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Regional executives wrote to us that they wanted to demonstrate today that was about two weeks ago, and we gave them the assurance to provide security for them to go ahead with the demonstration, but unknown to us the president will be in the region for an inauguration in Tamale, when we told them to postpone they refused but fortunately our attention was drawn that the president will be in the Salaga area and not Tamale this morning, so we gave them the go ahead, and we told the organisers that we will provide them the security and not them alone but the public around who are doing their normal activities, where the demonstration will go on,’ he explained.

DCOP Yeboah assured that they have put in place the needed logistics to curb untoward.

He called on the organisers to ensure that demonstrators do not cause mayhem to mar peace in the region.
